  2. Cellular network.This device sends that data through a particular communication protocol via a mobile network. Each manufacturer has its own protocol, andthat’s how it will determine which hardware will take part in a platform. 
  3. Self-hosted GPS server.Your server is able to receive and decode those transmissions.The difference between self-hosting and cloud is that the receiving server is not owned by the vendor, but by your organization. 
  4. Database.Decoded positions, trips,events, and alerts are stored in a database on your infrastructure. Retention periods, backup schedules & access permissions are set. 
  5. Web and mobile applications.Live maps,history and reports are displayed on the operations interface that can be branded and hosted on your site (for resellers) and displayed on the drivers’ user interface and/or resellers’ end users’ interface. 
  6. API andintegrations. This same data is used to fill ERP, TMS, accounting or dispatch systems via an API, which is where tracking information is needed when it comes to invoicing and planning efforts.

There are many open source GPS tracking projects that don’t have a traditional software license fee, but the full costs move to hosting, development, maintenance and support. Teams with development time have the option of projects like Traccar with large user bases.  

Two limits tend to surface as organisations scale. 

Internal cost replaces license cost. The patching and server administration, the protocol compatibility of the device, bug fixes and version upgrades are internal work, and no vendor is responsible for uptime. The engineering effort of businesses that grows around open source can be higher than that of a licence. 

Feature scope stops at tracking. Most open-source projects concentrate on location monitoring. These generally require custom development or additional systems.

Control over data location and retention. Vehicles, driver behaviour and delivery history, customer addresses – all these are sensitive records generated by fleet operations. Self-hosting defines where that data is stored and who puts the retention policy in place – important for GDPR, data-residency regulations, and clients asking where their data is stored.
