How self hosted GPS tracking works

A self hosted GPS tracking system has four parts: the tracker in the vehicle, the SIM that carries the data, your server that receives it, and the dashboard your team logs into. Once the tracker is pointed at your server address and port, every position report lands in your database and nowhere else.

  1. The tracker reports. A GPS device wired into the vehicle reads position, speed, ignition state and any connected sensors, then sends a packet over the mobile network every few seconds.
  2. The packet reaches your server. You point the device at your own server IP address and a listening port. AIQ Connect runs a receiver for each supported protocol, so devices from different makers can report to the same install.
  3. The data is decoded and stored. The platform reads the raw packet, works out the trip, the stop, the idle time and the sensor values, and writes it all to your own database.
  4. Your users see it. Staff, clients and drivers log in through your domain and your branding. Nothing they see mentions a software vendor, because the software is yours to name.

This is the part that separates self hosted GPS tracking software from a cloud subscription. On a cloud platform, step two goes to the vendor, and every step after it happens inside a system you rent. If the vendor changes pricing, drops a device protocol or shuts down a region, your business moves when they say so. Beyond the tracker itself, the platform reads the sensors wired into it. Fuel level probes, temperature probes, door and ignition inputs, driver identification readers, CAN bus data from the vehicle computer and camera triggers all come through the same connection and land in the same reports.
