What Counts Self-Hosted? 

Self-hosted is when the application and its database are hosted on infrastructure that the customer owns and manages (on-premise hardware, a private cloud instance or dedicated hosting) and the customer is responsible for setting the access, retention and backup policy.  

Open source is not necessarily about deployment; it’s about the licensing – source code is open, and there is typically no licence fee. They can be self-hosted both. Traccar and OpenGTS are open source projects, while Wialon Local, GpsGate On-site, Navixy On-Premise, GPSWOX, GPS-Server and AIQ Connect are commercial products. 

Commercial self-hosted A licensed, vendor-supported product that can be run on your servers. There is support and there are some features that are provided right out of the box; there is no source code. 

On-premise is a mode of self-hosting, not synonymous with it, meaning hardware that’s in your own facility. 

Private cloud If it’s a dedicated instance of infrastructure that you provision and manage, it’s self-hosting. Where it means an instance running on the vendor’s own infrastructure, but otherwise isolated, the isolation is enhanced and yet the servers are still vendor-operated — note that here the word is the same, but it actually means different things, so make sure to spell that out explicitly.

Best for: GPS tracking companies and fleet operators that wish to use the platform under their own brand and with a licence that does not monitor the number of vehicles.

Why consider it: A commercial self-hosted, white-label platform deployed on customer infrastructure. AIQ Connect states it is a single licence, with the software cost unchanged whether you track 50 units or 300,000, and no per-vehicle fees or monthly software charges, and that any GPS hardware protocol can be integrated. Fleet depth runs from tracking through driver behaviour scoring and fuel monitoring to dispatch, maintenance and invoicing. 

Advantages: Licensing is independent from assets—custom branding, UI and workflows—reports are based on your own KPIs instead of a formula—GDPR compliant deployment, air-gapped installation available. 

Limitations: AI dashcam videos are not the main product; AI dashcam video is not an FMCSA-registered ELD — fleets whose primary need is should seek out alternatives. Self-hosting implies that the server and IT resources are in one’s own name or with a hosting partner. It is important to confirm the scope of your license in writing for your deployment. 

Wialon Local — Best for Large Enterprise Deployments

GpsGate On-site is best suited for fleets who have in-house IT personnel

Best for: organisations seeking to have the tracking platform within their own network perimeter and staff to manage it.

Why consider it: GpsGate states that its On-site edition is a self-hosted solution which can run on-premises or on your own cloud server, and is explicit that in-house IT resources are needed to optimise the service. It’s helpful — not many vendors will explicitly declare it.  

Advantages: scripting and customisation, flexible deployment: on-premise vs your own cloud, vendor is upfront about operational requirements. 

Limitations: Pricing for the on-premise version is only available on a quote-only, requiring sales contactand the cloud version is priced per asset so the curve can’t be discounted due to self-hosting. 

Navixy On-Premise — Best for Regulated Deployments 

Best for: companies with data-residency needs or sector compliance needs.

Why consider it: “For regulated businesses, data management and compliance, security and operational efficiency” is why should it be considered according to Navixy. 

Benefits: Easy deployment and update of containerised vs bare-metal installation; well-developed API and integration; white label capability for resellers.

Limits: commercial licensing is not published; reduces but not eliminated administration requirement when containerised. Ensure that platform modules are part of the on-premise edition or cloud product.

Advantages: easy to access for initial deployment; broad device compatibility; according to independent reviewers at Capterra, customisation (white-label) and API access are differentiators.

GPS-Server — Best for Budget-Conscious Self-Hosting 

Best for: operators who require a licensed server product, but do not want enterprise procurement.

Limitations:

OpenGTS — Best for Custom Development 

Best for: developers who want to develop a custom tracking stack instead of purchasing a product.

Why consider it: Consider it because it’s one of the oldest open-source tracking projects, and may be used as the basis for custom builds where control of the code base is more important than out-of-the-box capabilities.

 Many open-source GPS tracking projects do not charge a traditional software licence fee, but the total cost shifts to hosting, development, maintenance and support. Neither model is inherently cheaper: open source buys flexibility with engineering time, commercial self-hosted buys capability and accountability with money. 

What Self-Hosted GPS Tracking Software Costs 

Unlike many of the other products in this category, on-premise pricing is not published but is quoted instead, so use any number you find online as a guideline. The only aspect that can be compared is structure.

Three year total cost = licence/subscription, hosting, implementation, support, security/back-up administration, engineering/customisation, hardware.

Run that formula across all three models for the same fleet size: 

  • Commercial self-hosted: One time licence + Hosting + Support + Administration. Constant software expenses, changing operating expenses. 
  • Cloud subscription: monthly fee per car, hardware, implementation. Low entry and costs follow the fleet growth curve. 
  • Open source:no license, hosting, engineering time to develop, maintain and support. Transfer funds from software to salary. 

Be careful of one thing in particular: Some commercial products out there that are self-hosted continue to charge for each asset being tracked, and that’s the point of self-hosting you may want to avoid. Before anything else, ask which licence is it, per deployment or per asset?

Self-hosted doesn’t necessarily means cheaper. When it comes to a small fleet that won’t expand, cloud typically will be cheaper over the course of three years.

  7. What API access is included, and is it documented? 
  8. What are the support terms, and which response times are contractual? 
  9. What technical capacity does the vendor state is required? 
  10. Who is responsible for security patching, and how are updates delivered? 
  11. What server sizing does the vendor recommend for your device count, ping interval and retention period?
